Janice Finlay

Janice Finlay

Janice is a woodwind “triple threat” whose artistry on saxophone, flute and clarinet has taken her across North America and as far away as Israel.

Her two feature albums – She’s Hip and Anywhere But Here – showcase Janice’s lyrical and evocative performance style along with her considerable skills as a composer and arranger. Both recordings have received critical acclaim and world-wide airplay, and include several of Canada’s pre-eminent jazz artists.

Janice is a first-call addition to Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Pops Concerts and a long-term member of the Ron Paley Big Band. Some selected career highlights include sharing the concert stage with one of her jazz heroes, Clark Terry, opening for Bob Newhart with the Janice Finlay Jazz Orchestra, and backing stars such as Kenny Rogers, Wayne Newton, Gloria Gayner, the Temptations and Mel Tormé. She also has performed in more than 45 musical theatre productions over the course of her career, and was honoured to be inducted into the Rainbow Stage Wall of Fame in 2018. Janice is also at home as a band director, leading groups including a commercial dance band, a variety of jazz ensembles, The Swing Cats and Premium.

Janice excels at sharing her musical gifts with aspiring musicians. She is in constant demand as a music educator, whether as a private instructor, school band clinician, festival adjudicator or summer camp director. In recognition of her contributions to jazz education, in 2004 Janice was delighted to be named the XeroxTM Manitoba Jazz Educator of the Year.
