Karin Carlson is a Winnipeg-based freelance musician. She plays trombone in many local groups including the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, the B-Side Champs, the Executive Big Band, and Marco Castillo’s Brazilian Beats. She is a jazz vocalist with several bands in the city, as well as arranging all styles, from jazz, pop, R & B, disco, and Latin. She played on the Juno award-winning WJO album “East Meets West: Connections”.
Once a year for 12 consecutive years, she has written arrangements for, played trombone in, and sung in a 8-12 piece horn-centric band to compete in the local CancerCare fundraiser Techapalooza. The past few years she has migrated into, if not “bandleader,” “rehearsal director and horn-player wrangler.” In 2020, the band was a big band. In prior years, it was a Latin Rock band, an Rhythm and Blues band, and mixed popular styles (funk, disco, pop, etc.) with a focus on horns.
