|Multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer and arranger specializing in Brazilian guitar and Latin music, Marco Castillo Cunha was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – the capital of Samba. After graduating in 1994 with a B.A. in Music from Estácio S.A. (Rio de Janeiro), he began touring South America with some of Brazil’s top acts, including Brazilian singer Rosa Marya Colin
Castillo has 35+ years of experience in the music industry and has toured and performed in many festivals in North America and around the globe, in addition to recording and producing many musical projects. In 2015 Marco was a finalist with his original “Forró no Canadá” for the Viña del Mar music festival in Chile, one of the most important music festivals in Latin America, which is broadcast and seen by millions of fans around the world.
Since immigrating to Canada in 2006, Castillo has become a fixture on the Winnipeg music scene, including regular appearances at the annual Jazz Winnipeg Festival. In 2010, local CBC Radio Producer Kinsey Posen selected Castillo to be part of the Manitoba Cover Project featuring new and emerging Manitoban artists covering well-known Manitoba composers. Marco Castillo’s contribution was a Portuguese version of These Eyes by The Guess Who and Neil Young’s Heart of Gold.
Castillo has collaborated with great names locally and abroad, such as the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra do Maestro Guio de Moraes, Ron Paley Big band, Trio Irakitan, Rosa Marya, Claudya (Evita), Luiz Carlos Batera (Banda Black Rio), Marcio Montarroyos (Ney Matogrosso, Elis Regina, Jobim), George Coligan (American Jazz Pianist), Rubão Sabino (Gilberto Gil), Thiago Feghali (Roupa Nova) and Kiko Freitas (João Bosco) among others. As an educator Castillo has presented several Brazilian music workshops at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Music, the Manitoba Music Conservatory and Long and McQuade, as well as teaching music and offering coaching for Spanish and Portuguese.
