Starting violin at age 3 in Winnipeg, Maya developed as a young musician under the guidance of Donna Grescoe and summer programs at the Banff Centre. She went on to study with Mauricio Fuks at McGill University where she received her Bachelor of Music in Performance with high distinction. A seasoned musician for over 25 years, Maya has been a member of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra and acting section violinist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She has freelanced extensively with ensembles for dance, contemporary opera, film, theatre and recording artists across Canada and currently performs with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and their outreach ensemble.
An advocate of music outreach education, Maya has taught in underserved communities empowering kids through music, in both Vancouver and Winnipeg for over 10 years. Within her private studio Maya enjoys working with beginners to advanced students (8+ yrs and up and adults of all ages) covering either/both classical and fiddle repertoire. Taking an openly engaged and supportive approach to teaching, Maya’s aim is to provide an enjoyable and flexible learning environment for all students including neurodivergent and shy kids.
